Big Ass Aliens vs. Hayao Miyazaki: The Final Results
August 16th 2009 17:23
The lastest sci-fi thriller, District 9, was triumphant this weekend dominanting both the box office and the critics.
The top 10 this week are (thanks to the good folks over at Box Office Mojo):
1.) District 9 -- $37,000,000
3.) The Time Traveler's Wife -- $19,500,000
4.) Julie & Julia -- $12,400,000
5.) G-Force -- $6,908,000
6.) The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard -- $5,350,000
7.) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince -- $5,155,000
8.) The Ugly Truth -- $4,500,000
9.) Ponyo -- $3,506,000
10.) (500) Days of Summer -- $3,025,000
The big winner this week is the much-hyped Disctrict 9. After winning over critics, the film made it to number 1 with a great 37 million, all ready out-grossing its tiny 30 million. Not to mention the strong word of mouth all ready coming out from audiences, expect this film to continue its success at the BO.
Despite a 58% drop, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra still was able to manage to land in second place. While its 98 million dollar domestic intake ain't exactly chump change, it's a bit of a dissapointment considering its massive 175 million dollar budget.
Another winner this week was the lastest chick flick, The Time Traveler's Wife, which took in a modest 19 million and a spot at third place. However, the rest of the new releases didn't fare so well. Due to limited marketing and mediocre reviews, the Jeremy Piven-comedy The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard only made it to the six spot with 5 million. Miyazaki's latest, Ponyo, despite rave reviews and the widest release he's had in America, made only 3 million, no thanks to the marketing campaign which alienated everyone over the age of 5. This big dissapoinment this week was Bandslam. With surprisingly strong reviews, the movie grossed a pathetic 2 million and landed at the number 13 spot.
Another new release, playing in limited release, the lastest Ashton Kutcher vehicle, Spread, made $117,000 on 91 screens.
See ya,
