Box Office Round-Up
September 6th 2010 12:07
Labor Day weekend at the Box Office proved to be just as uneventful as it always has. Considering how most consider it to be a dumping ground for some terrible movies (films to come out last Labor Day were Gamer and All About Steve), the year's slate seems to be above-average but still unspectacular.
The winner was George Clooney's The American. Thanks to the presence of Clooney (in a sea of unrecognizable foreign actors) as well as promises from the trailers that it'd be a decent action-fest (anyone whose seen the film will know that's far from the truth), the film made an intake of around 13 million, which makes it's total somewhere around of 16 million considering it opened on Wednesday.
Taking third place (behind Takers) is the other new release, Robert Rodriguez's Machete proved another decent hit, making around 11 million. Many going in were promised an exploitive-wannabe in the same vein of Grindehouse (which opened to slightly better numbers, but with helluva lot more hype), and that's exactly what they got, along with an eclectic supporting cast which includes Lindsay Lohan, Steven Seagal, and Robert De Niro.
Critics were also divided over the picture. While many proclaimed it to be a fun end-of-the-summer action flick, others said it failed to live up to it's exploitive roots.
The last new film in the top 10, and could probably be considered the only real disappointment of the year, was the romantic comedy Going the Distance. The formulaic film generated little business, despite starring the real-life couple of Drew Barrymore and Justin Long, making only six million at the box office.
