Cobra Commander vs. Julia Childs: The Final Results!

August 9th 2009 21:44

After a lackluster weekend last time, the box office was spruced up with the next summer blockbuster, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. The top ten for this weekend is as followed (thanks to the good folks from Box Office Mojo).

1.) G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra -- $56,200,000
2.) Julie and Julia -- $20,100,000
3.) G-Force -- $9,804,000
4.) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince -- $8,880,000
5.) Funny People -- $7,866,000
6.) The Ugly Truth -- $7,000,000
7.) A Perfect Getaway -- $5,765,000
8.) Aliens in the Attic -- $4,000,000
9.) Orphan -- $3,730,000
10.) (500) Days of Summer -- $3,725,000

Unsurprisely, the big winner this weekend is director Stephen Sommer's G.I. Joe, grossing a good-not-great total of 56 million. While it won't be as big of a smash as Transformers: Revenge of Fallen, but it won't become the next Land of Lost. Meanwhile, the flick was savaged by critics(it wasn't screened for them prior to the films). The film's general consensus? Downright stupid but entertaining.

Also opening this week, the Meryl Streep vehicle, Julie & Julia, came in at a far second place, grossing a modest 20 million. Adding to that, critics called the film a strong romantic comedy, supported by good performances, particularly Streep as famed cook Julia Childs.

Below G-Force and Harry Potter, both of which still going steady at third and fourth place at third and fourth place respectively, is Judd Apatow's Funny People making 7 million at fifth place. Dropping at a staggering 65% percent from last week, the film clearly won't become the box office smash that Apatow's previous feature films. The 40-Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, were. This follows in a long line of financial dissapointments from Universal (Land of the Lost, Public Enemies, Bruno), who have been having a pretty rough Summer.

Another new release was David Twohy's A Perfect Getaway, starring Milla Jovovich and Steve Zahn, came in at 7th with a lackluster 5 miliion, but with a budget of only 14 million, it will most likely break even one way or another. Also opening this week was Cold Souls, which at at only 7 theaters, made $63,300 at the BO.

Rouding out the rest of the top ten is The Ugly Truth, Aliens in the Attic,Orphan, and the critically-acclaimed indie film, (500) Days of Summer, which finally cracked the top ten while in limited release.

See ya,
