Gibson vs. Rome: Box Office Prediction for 1/28/'10
January 28th 2010 22:12
With Avatar officially becoming the highest grossing film of all time, there is little reason to doubt that it won't be staying at the number one spot for the seventh week in a row. It also makes it hard to generate that much interest when it comes to the two new films coming out this friday, the first a generic action flick and the second a generic romantic-comedy.
Edge of Darkness
You know, Mel Gibson has been been able to stay relavent for so long, whether it'd be through directing (Passion of the Christ still remains the highest-grossing R-rated film in America), drunken anti-semitic, and having a kid with a woman half his age, it's pretty hard to remember that this week's Edge of Darkness marks his first starring role since 2002's Signs. While Gibson will never be confused for a great actor, his decent acting chops and infinite charisma, it's nice to see the Aussie back in front of the camera. Unfortunately, it would have been nicer if his comeback was a little less on the bland side.
The marketing team have done a pretty good job of making this seem like you're generic action thriller. Strapped with a lazy plot about a veteran police officer (Gibson) takes revenge against those who killed his daughter (it's obvious that folks at Warner Brothers, the distributor, are hoping for Taken-like success, which had a simliar plot and release date last year, and became a surprise success). With a strong action director Martin Campbell, hot off his success with Casino Royale, and supporting cast, including Ray Winstone (which is always a plus in my book), it would not be much of a surprise if this was runner-up this week behind Avatar.
Wag the Film Prediction: $22,000,000
When in Rome
At first it might seem surprising that the helmer of craptastic superhero adaptations like Daredevil and Ghost Rider, that Mark Steven Johnson's next project would be the hopelessly generic-looking When in Rome. But then again, this is the same guy who penned Grumpy Old Men and Jack Frost.
Offering a nice alternative to the action-oriented Edge of Darkness, and featuring the starring the ever-cute Kristen Bell (who still looks like she's two-weeks from High School Graduation), Josh Duhamel (hey, he's got to do something in between those Transformers sequels), and a wide range of supporting players like Will Arnet, Jon Heder, and Dax Shepherd, the film has a good chance of cracking into the top 5 of the week, but don't expect much else.
Wag the Film Prediction: $14,000,000
