Ludacris vs. Mike Judge: Box Office Prediction for 9/4/'09

September 2nd 2009 12:25
After a Summer season filled with flops, hits, and dissapointments, we know head in to easily the least interesting, if not the worst, week of the year. Labor Day Weekend. At this time (including the whole month of September) is dumping ground films that quite simply didn't make the cut.

Gamer

I'm still sorta shock that Gerard Butler isn't the big action star that he should be. After hitting uber-success with the smash hit 300, he's career has mostly consisted of modestily-successful romantic comedites (P.S. I Love You, The Ugly Truth) and and dissapointing gangster flick (Guy Ritchie's Rock N Rolla). When he does return to the hardcore action genre, apparently Gamer is the best thing he can get nowadays.

Also starring is Chris "Ludacris" Bridges and Michae C. Hall (tv's Dexter) and coming from the directing duo of Nevaldine/Taylor (most will remember them from their latest flop, Crank 2: High Voltage, the film has an interesting enough premise and action scenes to probably make to the number one spot, but considering its Labor Day weekend, it should only make around 15,000,000.

Extract

One way or another, writer/director Mike Judge gets screwed over by the powers that be. After hitting the jackpot with MTV's Beavis and Butthead, he made his live-action directorial debut, the amazing Office Space. However, it was poorly promoted and flopped at the box office, only to grow a well-deserved cult following on DVD. His second feature, Idiocracy, got an even worse treatment, being dumped into two or three theaters before hitting DVD, becoming yet another cult classic. Even on television, Judge has no luck. His King of the Hill was constantly mess around with the studio (changing time slots, cutting seasons short, etc.) before finally cancelling in its 13th season, its finale airing on September 13.

Don't expect things to get much for Judge with his latest comedy, Extract. Dumped on Labor Day weekend with little marketing push, it sadly isn't the golden egg Mike Jude is desperate for. It should end up with a dissapointing 7,500,000.

All About Steve

You know it wouldn't be Labor Day weekend with a forgettable romantic comedy like All About Steve. With Sandra Bullock, hot off the surprise success of The Proposal, and Ryan Reynolds-wannabe Bradley Cooper, along with Thomas Haden Church and the Asian guy from The Hangover, it has enough of a fanbase to pull off a decent 10,000,000 at the box office. 'Nuff said.
